Jets RB Michael Carter has hot take on teammate Zach Wilson: ‘He deserved to be the No. 1 pick’

With the No. 2 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, the Jets selected quarterback Zach Wilson. At least one of his new teammates thinks that was a steal.

Jets rookie running back Michael Carter used a recent appearance on SiriusXM’s NFL Radio to praise Wilson’s performance during New York’s rookie minicamp. In fact, Wilson has impressed Carter so much that he believes the former BYU star should have gone No. 1 overall in the draft.

“I love Zach, we’re locked in already. That’s my boy. He’s a great player, he is literally so good,” Carter said. ”He’s so smart, he does minute stuff that just really wows you. He deserved to be the No. 1 pick if I’m being honest.”

In most years, Carter might have a case, but Trevor Lawrence was rightly the top selection by the Jaguars in 2021.

Lawrence has been called the best quarterback prospect since Andrew Luck and enjoyed a prolific career at Clemson. He completed 66.6 percent of his passes and averaged 3,366 passing yards, 30 touchdowns and 5.7 interceptions per season. He also posted a 34-2 record as a starter and led the Tigers to a national title.

Carter knows as much. He played against Lawrence during his career at North Carolina. But Carter made it clear that he’s “not knocking anyone” and is just excited to play with a talented quarterback like Wilson.

“All I’m saying is everyone knows Trevor Lawrence is elite,” Carter said. ”I played Trevor Lawrence in college, and I followed watching him week-to-week as well. Trevor Lawrence is a special talent too. All I’m saying is that some people were arguing for Zach [to be the No. 1 pick], and I agree with them. I feel like Zach is a great quarterback as well. I’m not knocking anyone. I’m just saying Zach is a great quarterback and I can’t wait to play with him.”

Only time will tell if Lawrence or Wilson will emerge as the better pro quarterback, but the two will get to battle for bragging rights when the Jets and Jaguars face off in Week 16.
