No. 9 Texas lost to TCU 33-31 on Saturday, unleashing a firestorm of “Texas is back” shots on Twitter in the process.
Despite the close score, the Longhorns never looked like a top-10-caliber team. They not only committed 12 penalties for 92 yards in the loss, they also committed two turnovers: an interception thrown by quarterback Sam Ehlinger that the Horned Frogs turned into a field goal, and a fumble by running back Keaontay Ingram on the TCU 1.
Add in that TCU (1-1, 1-1 Big 12) came into this game off a loss to Iowa State and Texas (2-1, 1-1 Big 12) needed a last-minute 15-point comeback to beat Texas Tech in Week 4, and it’s clear now that Texas was never truly a College Football Playoff contender. The loss also dropped Texas coach Tom Herman to 27-16 in three-plus seasons in Austin and 1-3 against TCU’s Gary Patterson.
Twitter was quick to add insult to injury, pelting Herman and Co. with “Texas is back” tweets. Perhaps Longhorns fans should just skip the middle man and assume that Texas isn’t back until it actually wins a national championship — or a Big 12 title, at least.
Until then, here’s a sampling of some of the best tweets at Texas’ expense:
Texas’ inability to be back is truly remarkable.

Texas is back to being mediocre. The Texas we’ve known and loved for almost 15 years.
