Los Angeles Rams (at Seattle)

The Rams are coming off the biggest upset of the year, losing to the previously winless Jets, so it’s understandable that L.A. has fallen far out of favor with the public against always-popular Russell Wilson and his Seahawks. Only 24 percent of pool entries are taking the Rams so far.

However, this is one of the closest spreads (1.5 points) of the week, and the Rams still have a real chance to complete the season sweep and re-take the lead in the NFC West. If you need to take a slight upset, this one leads the way from a value perspective.

Philadelphia Eagles (at Dallas)

Dallas has won two games in a row, and the public likes it. However, this win streak is not so much a sign of a huge turnaround as it is a case of a two-week run of great turnover results.

Dallas is plus-seven in turnovers over the past two weeks, reverting toward the mean after being a horrible -13 for the first 12 games. Meanwhile, the Cowboys have been outgained in yards over the past two weeks by both Cincinnati and San Francisco.

Philadelphia, on the other hand, has turned things around on offense with the switch at quarterback to rookie Jalen Hurts. With a little more than half the public going with Dallas, the Eagles offer modest (but still attractive) risk-vs.-reward tradeoff here as the betting favorite by two points.

Carolina Panthers (at Washington)

If you are looking for a reasonable but very unpopular upset pick, consider the Panthers. Washington is playing with pressure as they chase a playoff spot in the NFC East while the Panthers are eliminated, but the line in this one is only two points. It’s not unreasonable that the Panthers could “strip” Washington of their lead and unmask them. Still, nearly five of ever six pick ’em entries nationwide is taking Washington in this game despite the close point spread and the uncertainty in the Washington quarterback situation this week.

If you are trying to catch up in your pool, or playing in a pool that only awards weekly prizes, you’ll rarely see as attractive a contrarian pick as Carolina is this week.

Taking all three picks above likely isn’t appropriate for all pool situations, since it would involve a lot of risk with two upset picks. Your best choices largely depend on factors such as where you are currently in the standings with time now running out, and your pool’s payout structure.

Week 16 NFL Survivor Pool Advice

The three most popular teams in survivor pools this week are teams that haven’t been used very much this year but happen to catch some of the NFL’s worst teams. The Cleveland Browns (at the Jets) lead the way in Week 16 survivor pick popularity at 34 percent. The Chicago Bears (at Jacksonville) and Houston Texans (vs. Cincinnati) are also both over 10-percent popularity.

Because the public is concentrated on those three teams, if you have another option, it’s probably worth a look. The Kansas City Chiefs, for example, is the largest favorite of the week; so if you still have the Chiefs available, now looks like the time to use them.

Keep in mind that the best Week 16 pick for your survivor pool this week depends on a lot of things, like how many entries are still alive, whether you face double picks in later weeks (or other non-standard rules), and what teams you’ve used so far.
